What is Tesla Coil ?

Tesla coil is a great invention which is created by Nikola Tesla.  Nikola Tesla ( The father of Alternating Current) invented Tesla coil in the year of 1891.

He was a great Scientist that he had created a lot of magics for the humanity or for the welfare of Humanity .

Nikola Tesla has created Tesla coil and he showed its working to the Others by himself .

But to give the idea about Tesla coil I want to tell you that it is a coil which can power the electrical and electronic components wirelessly. By that coil a huge amount of Magnetic field is Created and the Electrical and Electronic component which comes under this get the energy and lit up.

In this Article you will learn How to make Tesla coil as a small project or Homemade Tesla coil.

Components Required to Make Tesla coil for Science Project :-

1. A Battery ( Usually we use battery of 9v for the small project).

2. Battery clip to connect battery with the Circuit.

3. A 2N222A Transistor .

4. A primary coil of 3 to 4 turns. (copper wire).

5.  A Secondary Coil of copper wire grater than 200 turns.

You can use a plastics pipe to make Secondary coil by using copper wire.

6. There you can use a Diode .

7. OR on the place of Diode you can use a switch also.

Because we all know the functioning of the Diode is a switch .

Diode will act as a switch in the two mode.

a. It will act as a close switch in the forward biased condition.

b. It will act as a open switch in the Reverse biased condition.

Circuit for the Tesla Coil and working on the small scale (for a project purpose):-

Here in the Circuit you can see a 9v battery is connected to the circuit which will supply power to the circuit.

Here a Transistor is also connected of 2N222A . we all know that the working of the Transistor is also like a Switch.

Transistor has three ports 
1. Emitter

2. Base 

3. Collector 

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the Emitter of the transistor .

Base of the transistor is connected to the 22k ohm resistor with one end of Secondary coil.

Then the collector of the Transistor is connected to the one end to the primary coil and the other end of the Primary coil is connected to the 22K ohm resistor .

The primary coil is placed around the Secondary Coil.

Then the connecting point of the Primary coil and 22k ohm resistor is connected to the switch .

The switch is connected to the positive end of the battery.

Here the circuit is completed .

You can see spark and the energy to the Air by the open end of the Secondary coil.

Working of this Tesla coil:-


When the battery supply  power to the switch then transistor gets the voltage of its working condition and it acts like a close switch.

Then a current starts to flow in the primary coil and a changing magnetic field is generated .

Due to the EMI a current is induced in the Secondary Coil .

There you can see that in Secondary coil no close loop so there a warm medium is created by that current .

After that medium gets ionized and it release the energy to the Air and then you will see that magic of Tesla coil.
